模型历史：1943年1月1日，VF-17中队在弗吉尼亚州诺福克海军武器站成立，首任中队长为Lt.Cmd. John Thomas Blackburn。作为最早装备F-4U“海盗”战斗机的中队之一，VF-17决定将中队标志与海盗联系起来，不久一面带着白色骷髅头和两根交叉骨头的黑旗被画上F-4U的引擎整流罩一侧。从此，史上最著名的“Jolly Rogers（海盗旗）”中队正式诞生了。

1945年，VF-17使用F6F地狱猫在大黄蜂号航母（CV-12 Hornet）上服役，在1945年3月19日，VF-17中队的地狱猫遇到并击落20架川西紫电-改，自身也损失6架F6F，在3-4月期间，VF-17中队共击落各型飞机146架，并参加了对硫磺岛和大和号战舰的攻击作战，成为海军头号王牌中队。VF-17先后出了15位王牌飞行员，在海军中队中排第一。
